Jezebel
Written by Darci Monet/Levi Kreis

V1:
Fiery red hair, beguiling blue stare
I saw how she caught your eye
Look if you dare, but you should be aware
She never lets her victims survive
Oooh, she’s a little vixen
Better to keep your distance

CH1:
Baby don’t cha know that woman is a Jezebel
One, two, she got you underneath her wicked spell
Wake up, pick yourself up and get out alive

V2:
More complex than the rush of mere sex
It’s the soul that she really wants
If she chooses you next, you’d better expect
There’ll be nothing left of you when she’s done
Always the same old story
You oughta heed my warning

CH2:
Baby don’t cha know that woman is a Jezebel
One, two, she got you underneath her wicked spell
Wake up, pick yourself up and get out alive
Baby don’t cha know that woman is a Jezebel
Three, four, run before she drags you with her into hell
Hear me, don’t cha be Jezebel’s prey tonight

BR:
Oooh, what a little vixen
Better to keep your distance
You’ll be wishin’
You had listened

V1:
Come October
When this is over
I’ll remember
A sweet September
When the days still warm with summer’s kiss
Turned to nights of senseless bliss
When my name was music to your ears
Another time, another world
When I used to be your girl

CH:
I’ll remember you like you told me to
I won’t forget how our souls once met
In the cold dawn when I find you gone
I’ll remember a sweet September

V2:
Should’ve known
We had no right
To let our hearts
Take such a flight
No right to call the angels down
Or to bid them gather round
Who were we to dare and touch Divine
‘Cause love is blind and love is deaf
Now here we are with nothing left

(CH)

(Cello Solo)

Another time, another place
When September slipped away

V1:
You thought I’d be
Easily enthralled
Docile, fragile
Like a paper doll
You seduced my heart
Then you played the part
Till I saw through your agenda
Did ya really think
Stupid little me
Wouldn’t catch ya

CH:
It ain’t no mystery
I see you clearly
You have underestimated me
Thought I would take it
Maybe even break but
Guess what, this time
Not me

V2:
Followed blindly
Missed all the signs
I was caught up
In your labyrinth of lies
Hope ya had your fun
Fooling everyone
Now the truth has come to call
It must be a shock
To find you cannot
Crush me like a paper doll

BR:
There is nobody else to blame
This is your mistake
So shut up and take
The pain

V1:
Sultry summer night, the juke joint’s jumpin’
They come from all around to hear the boys lay down the groove
From across the room I saw you comin’
When you stood behind me, it was hard to keep my cool

You triggered my senses
And it’s more than I can stand
Caught that bittersweet aroma
The essence of a man

CH:
Smoke and leather
Damn, you’re a force of nature
Pullin’ me to you like gravity
Smoke and leather
Let me/Can I get a little closer
I bet you could give me what I need

V2:
In the haze and the din, you got all my attention
My head began to swim with every minute by your side
I got drunk on your scent, a chemical reaction
That unexplained juju that can make a woman wild
I can feel my composure
Crumblin’ apart
How can a perfect stranger
Do this to my heart

In such a long time
And it's strange
All we have in common
And your company was just the thing I needed tonight
Somehow I feel I should apologize

Keeping my composure
And pretend I don't see how
Your body curves beneath your clothes

The Rest of You
V1)
Don't say a word, don't say a thing
Don't say anymore, I can't think
I can't, I can't
Just wanted you to understand
All I was asking was just
A chance, one chance
I'm trying to simply love you
But I can't get through

CH)
Cuz she got the claim on your heart
And I got the broken parts
And she got the best of you
I get the rest of you

V2)
I'm not her, she's not me
Why is it so hard to see
I'm not to blame
But nothing I do proves it to you
Time and again I must pay for her mistakes
I'm dying to simply love you
Just let me through

(repeat CH)

BR)
I know you told her that it's over
But her ghost keeps coming back
And with her breathing over my shoulder
How can I compete with that
Baby I can't

If she got your body and soul
Then I've gotta know what's left for me

CH2)
She got the claim on your heart
And I got the broken parts
And she got the best of you
I get what's left of you
What's left of you
Left of you

Alan's Tears
V1:
Heard it said that love can move mountains
But I could never get close to him
A million miles between his voice and me
Not about to let me in
And it's the hardest thing
To let him bleed
But that's the only choice he leaves me

CH:
I cannot bear his cross
I cannot ease his pain
I cannot cleanse his soul
Or wash away his shame
I cannot be his truth
Or overcome his fear
There isn't any use
In crying Alan's tears

V2:
Blinded by the sins of the father
He doesn't know his strength of heart
But if he won't believe then I can't make him see
I'm not enough to heal those scars
So I give up the ghost
And I'll let him go
No matter how I want to keep hold

(CH)

And it's the hardest thing
to watch you bleed
And even though inside this kills me

What The Angels Know
V1)
Childhood, my eyes full of wonder
At what life will offer
Growin' up, my soul unaffected
And overprotected
Did what I was taught
Learning right from wrong

Woman, goodbye adolescence
Goodbye innocence
I learned how a heart becomes jaded
And a soul becomes tainted
Still have hope in my sights
Lookin' for the keys to life

CH)
I wanna know why my heart breaks
At the memory of a kiss
I wanna see where I am goin'
Is there ever more than this
I wanna read between the lines
And hear more than what I'm told
I wanna know, I want to know
What the angels know

Someday I'll lose my luster
My days will be numbered
Did I make good decisions
Accomplish my missions
Will I be old and wise
Or was I living a lie

The best laid plans may not hold
So let the mysteries unfold

Down this road go I
A new world before my eyes
With broken feet I'll go

God help me I'm afraid
To abandon yesterday
But I'll have it no other way

CH)
Freedom
I'm finding my way back home
Freedom
I'm finding my own road

V2)
I'm not what you think
No, you never knew me
Didn't think I had the strength
But I'm made of tougher stuff
The years have proved as much
No, my spirit did not break

And if I feel lonely here
There's a whisper in my ear
The end is drawing near

Notes
Written during a period in Darci's life when life-altering changes were taking place: "This song started when Keith's (bass player/co-writer) grandfather passed away and he brought me the guitar riff and wanted to write a song about it. The lyric became a metaphor for the difficult journey I was taking through my life at the time and Keith's grandfather was taking to the afterlife." With the help of Moe Loughran's (www.moerocks.com) gift of melody, the result is "My Own Road" and is the title track of Darci's debut CD.

All of these games make a little girl mean

There's a couple things I think you missed
I need more than a fiery kiss
Somethin' more to keep me satisfied
Truly satisfied
I need a man who is strong and sure
Loves his woman with a heart that's pure
Someone who'll let me be his world
These are the things that keep me satisfied
Truly satisfied

I want you to love me

V1)
I like to drive myself just a little crazy
And I like to pity myself when I'm feeling lazy
I'm slow to take the blame when all my plans go wrong
But if I can point a finger, man it does not take me long
Well I'm good at being ugly and bad at being good
But I don't know how to change it, I just wish I could

CH)
When will I find sunshine in the rain
Any minute these clouds are gonna break
I keep thinking that love is on the way
When will I find sunshine in the rain

V2)
Sometimes I'm much too frightened to even make a start
Feels like it's been declared open season on my heart
When I decide to close the door, you are not to knock
Nothing you do can get you in and no one can break the lock
Well I'm tired of being angry and sick of crying too
I just want to be happy, what's a girl to do

(CH)

I know beggars can't be choosers so I guess I'll just make do
Gonna carry this umbrella till the sun comes through

Morning comes to stare you back in the face
Stare you back in the face
You can't hide
You can't build a wall around your soul
You can't hop a train
And hope the truth won't follow where it goes
Follow you where it goes
Run litte boy from what's inside you
Run little girl I am right beside you

CH)
Your destination is peace
When you think you're heart is empty
But there's still some power left
A little bit is plenty
Just a little bit

And your destiny is peace

Slithering out of hell
But your sight is poor
It's been so long since you've been to the well
Since you've been to the well

And he's sure to find you out no time at all

Just an ordinary man
Thrown into a life I did not plan
Suddenly my world has changed
I'm unprepared to make my way
My resolve is growing weak
So unsure of who I'm supposed to be
The one who takes the noble path
Or the one who wants what he can never have

But I can't entertain the thought
Cuz we both I'm not the man you thought I was

The ones who pay the price
And so I set aside my dreams

Yeah I'm hardly a hero

From the CD "One of the Ones" by recording artist Levi Kreis. Words and Music by Levi Kreis/Darci Monet. Produced by Levi Kreis for his album "One of the Ones". Vocals and piano by Levi Kreis. c.2005 Surgery Puppy Music (ASCAP)/Songs From The Fortress (BMI).
Notes
Strangely enough, this song was inspired by a combination of a) the tragedy of September 11th and b) watching the second installment of the Spider-man films. Sometimes the heroes of the world are those who wish they didn't have to be.

Never thought I was one of the lucky ones
I put my heart in places it didn't belong
Well I guess you never find it if you never try
God knows I must have tried about a million times
Just as soon as I shut love out of my life
Finally you found me

CH:
And now I see forever in your eyes
This time can't find a reason for me to hide
Waiting for the love I couldn't find
You found me

Remember when we were wild and didn't give a damn
Breakin' hearts along the way and never lookin back
Too perfect that we never met back then
Growing up makes you hunger for the meaning
Just when I'd gotten so tired of reaching
Finally you found me

(CH)

BR:
I'm not an island anymore
With you I live for so much more
And I'll never ever ever let you go

V1)
You have the truest smile
And your eyes are the deepest ocean
Your body drives me wild
So much that I can't help knowing
You are the kind of girl
That I could give my heart to
And never look over my shoulder

Then again the truth sets in
And I find that I stand here broken
You never speak my name
You may not even know it
Everytime that you pass my way
It seems my soul is dying
Over and over and over
And somewhere inside I realize

CH)
You're the girl that I'll never know
Though I'd give you my heart and soul
But I guess that it's not meant to be
So I'll go on living in make believe

V2)
Wish I could make you see
All the things that you've been missing
Show ya how it feels to be
With a man who needs your kisses
If I had just one chance
Then maybe you would notice
How patiently I have been waiting
To be the reason you smile

(CH)

BR)
If I had just one chance
Then maybe you would notice
I've been here, I've been waiting
Wanna be the reason you smile

Open your eyes to the future love
Open your eyes to the future love

You may not like the road I'm walkin
But that don't mean that I'm right and you're wrong
We're just two in a world of interpretations
So what's the point in me cuttin you off

There's a bigger picture
And the time is now
We need a new system
If we're gonna find a common ground

CH:
Everybody
Come together in a future love
Everybody
Come together in a future love

When I speak my mind I do it with passion
But it's all good if your opinions aren't mine
You will see there ain't no need to feel threatened
Let's talk about it
Let's give it a try

There's a bigger picture
And the time is now
We need a new system
If we're gonna find a common ground

I can feel you coming in the still of night
And I'm lifeless, waiting for control
In you a thousand fantasies are put to flight
A thousand fires burn within my soul
Oh baby can't you hear me calling come to me
And wrap me round your finger just like that
I can't escape this prison that you've made for me
Oh baby you have caught me in the act
And now the taste of your surrender
It's gonna ease my appetite
I'm getting caught up in a feeling
That I can't even try to fight

CH)
Got to have your love
Just can't live without it baby
Got to have your love
Tonight
Got to have your love
Don't make me go without it, baby
Got to have your love,
Tonight

V2)
Now I don't got to tell you what you do me
Because it's obvious you sweep me off my feet
Never tasted anything that's quite so sweet
And when you touch me I can't even breathe
And now I'm waiting for reaction
My chance to do the thing just right
Every little kiss is just a fraction
Of what you're gonna get tonight

Notes
This is a little tune we desperately wanted to pitch to Chaka Kahn and as soon as you hear it, you'll get why. This is an oldie-but-goody from the Chris Mitchell and the Collection days. Dig Chris doing the "George Benson thing" along with David Haynie's guitar on the breakdown!

Words and music by Amanda McBroom. Vocals by Darci Monet. Produced by John Swihart.
Notes
The clip of this classic pop song is played with no overlying dialogue (sort of) during the "happy hands club" scene early on in the movie "Napoleon Dynamite" and is pulled directly from the film's DVD. Don't be shocked by the class jock snickering or the abrupt cut off into the next scene!

Trivia: It's also interesting to note that Darci recorded two more ORIGINAL disco-style songs (written by John Swihart) for the film as it went to festival. At the last minute, festival licenses were acquired by the producers and the two other songs Darci recorded were replaced by the songs they originally had hoped to license. Had that not happened, Darci's voice WOULD have been heard singing away during Napoleon's infamous "Vote for Pedro" shimmy at the end of the movie. Oh well...maybe next time!

This was one of the original demos Darci's friend John Swihart (score composer, "Napoleon Dynamite") was commissioned to write for ABC's sitcom, "Hope and Faith". Unfortunately the studio decided to use a newly signed major label artist on the vocals for the final version, but our girl Ms. Monet got a paycheck and a kickin' little rock demo out of it regardless...and life goes on!

Well I left a good job in the city
Working for the man every night and day
But I never lost one minute of sleepin'
Worrying 'bout the way that things might have been

Proud Mary keep on burnin'
And we're rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river
Said we're rollin', rolling', rollin' on the river
Get up doo, doo, doo

People get ready for the train to Jordan
Pickin' up passengers from coast to coast
Faith is the key to open the doors for boarding
There's room for all of them that love Him most

There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner

Have pity on those whose chances are thinner

Credits
Written by the great Curtis Mayfield. Arranged by Darci Monet and Chris Mitchell. Recorded at Massey Auditorium (Belmont University), Nashville, TN. Vocals by Darci Monet and Chris Mitchell. Guitar - David Hainey, Bass - Keith Kenyon, Keys - Geoff Koch, Drums - Chris Brown.
Notes
In Darci's words:
"I believe this particular recording is from Chris' senior concert as a music student at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. However, this is the song that always brought the house down for us at Chris Mitchell and the Collection gigs all over town. It's a battle for who can sing higher...and I think Chris wins! Inevitably, every single time, we'd run out of air at the big finish and this performance is no exception! One day I'd love to do a studio version of this arrangement with a big ole gospel choir in the background. Let's have church - praisaluiah!"

Written and produced by John Swihart for Sonic Gracy Productions. Vocals - Darci Monet and Matthew Hayes.
Notes
This is another dance track from the soundtrack of the indie documentary "When Boys Fly". As often happens in independent filmmaking, the songs the producers would LIKE to use in their movies are too expensive to license or flat out denied licensing. That's where people like John Swihart, Darci and Matt come in! The producers hire someone to write a knock-off of the song they REALLY want, and then other instrumentalists and singers come in to record it. Voila! Same effect desired in the first place, for way below licensing value.
Info
Here's the place where all oddities will land! Rare live tracks, rough demos, songs only a true, die hard fan (or Darci's mother) would love...if it's "miscellaneous" it will be here.
